There's an App for That

Overview:

Literacy is an integral part of the development of the whole child as well as a key component to academic success. Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. In order to master literacy, special concern must be given to the following skills:
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Alphabetic Principle
  • Phonics
  • Morphology
  • Encoding/ Decoding

   Reading Skills Defined:

Phonemic Awareness is a term that means ‘awareness of the speech sounds of language.’

The Alphabetic Principle is the idea that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language.

Phonics describes the sound-letter correspondences and related spelling words.

Morphology describes how words are formed using morphemes or the smallest units of meaning in a word. (For example, 'play' is the smallest meaningful unit in the word 'playing')

Encoding is the process of putting letters in a sequence to form words. (Spelling)

Decoding is a term used to describe the process of reading an unfamiliar word by ’cracking the code’ (Word Attack Skills)
